A Message from Rick Hanson, Chief of Police

Rick Hanson

On behalf of the Calgary Police Service, I would like to welcome all delegates of the Inter-American Development Bank Annual Meeting to our city.

Calgary has the distinction of being one of the safest cities in Canada. Our crime rate consistently decreases, year after year, and one of our best tools in the fight against crime is our own citizens.

The Calgary Police Service values its solid relationship with Calgarians. In fact, in a recent survey Calgarians gave the police service a 93 per cent overall satisfaction rating. In the same survey, 91 per cent said they feel that Calgary is a safe place in which to live and raise a family.

You will likely see many of our officers patrolling the downtown core as you come and go from the Telus Convention Centre and your hotels. The Calgary Police Service uniform is dark blue, with a red stripe down the side of each pant leg.

Our officers can be seen walking the beat, driving in marked and unmarked police cruisers (cars, vans, sport utility vehicles), and many can been seen riding mountain bikes – even in the frigid winter months.

Most officers wear a standard blue and red forage cap, while you will see others in Calgary's trademark black Stetson cowboy hat – a tribute to our western heritage.

Please feel free to stop them and say hello, even to have your picture taken.

Should you find yourself needing assistance from the police, do not hesitate to call 911 in an emergency, or 403-266-1234 for less urgent situations.

I hope you enjoy your stay in Calgary and are able to take advantage of all the great attractions our city has to offer.

Rick Hanson
Chief of Police
